There is no greater tyranny than which is perpetrated under the shield of the law and in the name of justice. Montesquieu. There are cases in history where the State has gone insane and waged war upon its own people. Though such cases are far and apart but examples do exist. They stand testimony to the reality of how such an endeavour usually ends. A century ago, Chief Justice Charles Evans Hughes, delivered one of the most influential lectures on the Constitution related to war. In it he uttered the most famous axiom that ‘the power to wage war is the power to wage war successfully’. Though a very loaded statement and one that carries so much meaning, the one that really matters most is, the consequences of losing that war. When the State chooses to initiate war against its own people it is termed as tyranny. It is commonly understood that all tyrannies rule through fraud and force, but once the fraud is exposed they must rely exclusively on force – physical confrontation/war. NEW YORK (AP) — Wall Street drifted to a mixed finish Friday after data suggested the U.S. job market is still warm enough to keep the economy growing but maybe not so hot that it stokes inflation much higher. The S&P 500 lost 12.64 points, or 0.3%, to 4,398.95, though slightly more stocks within the index rose than fell. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gave up 187.38, or 0.6%, to 33,734.88, and the Nasdaq composite edged down by 18.33, or 0.1%, to 13,660.72.A lot is riding on whether the economy can navigate the narrow pathway to avoid a long-predicted recession. It needs to keep growing despite much higher interest rates instituted by the Federal Reserve to bring down inflation. But it can’t grow so quickly that the Fed feels pressure to brake much harder on the economy to prevent inflation from spiraling higher.Friday’s report showed U.S. employers added 209,000 jobs last month, a slowdown from May’s hiring of 306,000. Perhaps more importantly, it wasn’t far off economists’ e...Review of Guatemala’s vote appears to largely uphold results from June 25 presidential elections

GUATEMALA CITY (AP) — A court-ordered review of Guatemala’s June 25 presidential election that included a second look at dozens of precinct tally sheets appears to have upheld the original vote totals, an electoral official said Friday. If candidates Sandra Torres and upstart Bernardo Arévalo remain the two highest vote-getters in the re-examination, it will boost the likelihood that their one-two finish in the first round will stand and that the two candidates will head to a run-off election Aug. 20. Asked about the vote tally review during a news conference Friday, Magistrate Gabriel Aguilera of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal praised the precinct panels of regular citizens responsible for tallying votes and told them not to be discouraged by critics of their work.“In an exercise of civic responsibility, they watched over the vote of each Guatemalan and with the results of the second hearings … they confirm the June 25 results,” Aguilera said. “This has to be emphasized and su...Latest news
