PHOENIX — Denver general manager George Paton and head coach Sean Payton each painted a picture of the 2023 season at the NFL’s spring ownership meetings here Monday that included wide receivers Jerry Jeudy and Courtland Sutton catching passes for the Broncos.“We’re excited to have them on our football team, two young players in their prime,” Paton said, addressing rumors about one or both being traded this offseason. “I think Sean said it best: We’re not interested in trading them. When you’re in my position, you get a lot of calls and we’ve got calls on those players. We anticipate them being here and I can’t wait to see them in Sean’s offense with these coaches. Jerry (23) years old and the way he finished the season — last five games (was impressive).“Courtland played 15 games, had close to 900 yards, so to see these two receivers with Tim Patrick, with the others we’ve added, we’re excited to see where it’s going.”Payton cited what he considers to be a relatively weak dra...

State Farm is raising rates for California drivers

State Farm, California's largest vehicle insurer, is raising rates for its 3.7 million policyholders now that many if not most of them are on the road again.Vehicle insurance premiums declined during the pandemic after I and others pointed out to the state Department of Insurance that rates no longer reflected the reality of cars sitting in driveways. Now Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara is approving rate increases in light of the pandemic easing and people returning to offices. Most recently he's given the green light for State Farm to raise premiums by a total $264 million, which translates to about $70 per policyholder.Insurers say the higher rates reflect the greater risk of most people being back on streets and freeways. But consumer advocates say this is price gouging, and that in many cases, higher premiums are unwarranted."These massive premiums increases have been approved even though most auto insurance companies have failed to fully repay their customers for windfall over...

Video shows car launched into the air by runaway tire in Los Angeles

Dramatic dash camera footage from a Tesla captured the moment a vehicle on a Southern California freeway ran over a tire that had just come off a nearby pickup truck, launching the car into a midair spin. The incident occurred on Mar. 23 on the 118 Freeway in Chatsworth and was caught on Anoop Khatra’s dashboard camera.  Video shows traffic moving along the roadway when a dark-colored vehicle approaches a pickup truck that had just transitioned into the middle lane. Moments later, the truck’s front driver’s side tire pops off right in front of the dark-colored car.  The driver of the dark-colored vehicle runs over the tire and shoots into a midair spin before crashing back onto the freeway hood first and rolling back right side up. As if that weren't scary enough, the video also shows the tire coming back into the frame and slamming into the wreckage of the vehicle as it skids to a stop.  Dash-cam footage from a Tesla captured the moment a vehicle on the 118 Freeway in Cha...

‘Longer than any game I’ve ever been a part of’ – Sequoia, Palo Alto play 19-inning, six-hour baseball epic

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 03:37:46 GMT

Sequoia and Palo Alto played a marathon of marathon games, 19 innings stretched across almost six hours, with 13 players throwing 576 pitches during 158 plate appearances. The result Saturday was the most grueling 7-4 victory of Sequoia coach Mike Doyle’s career.“I’ve been involved in a few nine- or 10-inning games, but it was eight or nine innings longer than any game I’ve ever been a part of,” said Doyle, who has been with the Sequoia program for nearly a decade and played high school and college baseball in the Midwest in the 1980s. The game was longer than any at the MLB level in 2022 and six innings off the United States high school record, a 25-inning affair in 1975 between East Bay schools Hayward and San Lorenzo. When asked if he wanted to play seven more innings to break the record, Doyle was quick to answer.“No,” he told the Bay Area News Group with a laugh. “We had a great day, and 19 innings was enough. We’ll let Hayward and San Lorenzo keep the record.”On Friday, Sequoi...

As another Tuesday approached, so, too, did another foreboding storm, promising at least some of the same menace as the two previous ones to whip through the region.“We’re gonna see the winds increase,” National Weather Service meteorologist Rick Canepa said Monday afternoon. “We’re gonna see more rain. It’s going to be cold. And you’re going to see it along all the coastal sections from Sonoma County all the way down to Monterey County, into the Santa Cruz Mountains and along the East Bay Hills.“All of the locations in the region will see similar conditions.”Lately, if it’s a Tuesday in March, a nasty weather system is swallowing the region. On March 21, a furious atmospheric river storm clobbered the Bay Area, ushered in 70 mph winds and killed five people. On March 14, winds hit nearly 100 mph. Both of those storms left trees down, thousands of people without power and areas flooded. The weather front set to move in by ear...
